Exploring Historic Ramsey
Ramsey is the Isle of Man’s second-largest town and the lively heart of the north. Its independent shops, cafés, pubs and working harbour sit close to the beach, making it an easy place to explore at a gentler pace.
Known in Manx as Rhumsaa, traditionally translated as “Wild Garlic River,” Ramsey has welcomed seafarers, settlers and invaders for centuries. Godred Crovan landed here in 1079, while Robert the Bruce arrived during his campaign on the island in 1313.
The town later became an important centre for shipbuilding. The iron-hulled Euterpe was launched in Ramsey in 1863 and is now preserved in San Diego as the Star of India, one of the world’s oldest surviving active sailing ships.
Ramsey’s royal connections include the visit of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1847, commemorated by Albert Tower. Today, the town’s maritime story continues through its working harbour and the careful restoration of the Victorian Queen’s Pier.
